TV Forum Discussion with Young People

A TV program, under the theme “Only You Can Stop AIDS”, in cooperation with TV9 remarkably continued to reach thousands of young people. Each month TV campaigns are implemented using communications professionals in order to answer all concerned questions from young people. Professionals from government departments, NGOs, civil society, community workers, and people living with HIV/AIDS discussed HIV/AIDS and other relevant issues on TV.

TV Forums have in the past drawn larger audiences through TV broadcasts including all age groups and combining them with music and HIV/AIDS plays by volunteer groups or reference group, which proves most effective in disseminating the information.

Twelve Forums have been produced this year with the participation of 611 young people, of which 252 were girls from different schools and institutions as well as young people who have left school. Regarding exposure to CHEC's media campaign, the reach of media campaign to youths in Phnom Penh appears quite widespread, which is encouraging.

Radio Program

A live radio program has been implemented as an effective means of disseminating information about HIV/AIDS, and as a medium to get our messages across.

CHEC has broadcast a one-hour live radio program through 102 FM of the Women’s Media Centre (WMC) with the theme “Me You Must Know”.

The objectives of the live radio program are to provide information about HIV/AIDS, to encourage community members to speak out openly on HIV/AIDS, and to share their experiences on HIV/AIDS prevention in the community, and on treatment, care and advocacy. The listeners have the opportunity to phone in and offer opinions, ask questions and share ideas about HIV/AIDS related issues.

The live radio covered 12 topics, one topic per program, which included How to Change Behavior, MSM and HIV/AIDS, OVC and HIV/AIDS, Personal Empowerment for Success and Leadership, Mobile People and HIV/AIDS and Together Stop the Spread of HIV/AIDS, I Promise, Rights of Young People and Healthy Sexuality, Disabled People and HIV/AIDS, Women’s Empowerment, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, Candlelight Memorial Day and Importance of Media Program through TV and Radio. The speakers were from government departments, NGOs, civil society, community workers. People living with HIV/AIDS also spoke.

The program helps motivate people by building on aural/oral traditions and stimulating interaction between the speaker and audience. During the past year there were 86 callers during the live radio program, of which 54 callers (63%) were men and 32 callers (37%) were women. They called from Phnom Penh and 10 provinces: Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Kandal, Kampong Chnang, Kampong Speu, Takeo, Kratie and Koh Kong. The highest number of callers came from Phnom Penh, the second highest came from Kampong Thom, the third was from Kampong Cham and the fourth from Kandal. Both figures are shown below.
